Our client in the mining industry is looking for a Master Rigger to join their team in Kathu, for an 6-8-month contract (shut-down).

The purpose of the role is to oversee and execute complex rigging operations involving lifting, moving, and placing heavy loads using specialist equipment and techniques. In addition, the successful candidate will be required to guide Riggers on safety, quality, and problem-solving.

Duties

Safety and Health

  • Adhere to all health and safety practices and requirements.
  • Promote good housekeeping to ensure compliance and an environment where team members can deliver their outputs within a controlled risk environment.
  • Exemplify all relevant safety standards and procedures as a positive example for learners to follow and prioritise in their work practices.
  • Active participation in SLAMs, HPHs, relevant Risk Assessments and close-out of Safety Actions.

Performance and Delivery

  • Develop comprehensive plans for rigging operations, considering load weights, dimensions, and environmental factors. Co-ordinate with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure proper execution.
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments to identify potential hazards associated with rigging operations. Implement safety measures and protocols to minimise risks and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Select appropriate rigging equipment and gear based on the lift's requirements. This includes choosing the proper slings, cables, shackles, and other hardware to secure and move loads safely.
  • Regularly inspect and maintain rigging equipment to ensure compliance with safety standards. Identify and address any defects or issues that could compromise its integrity.
  • Calculate load's weight and centre of gravity to determine the most effective rigging configuration. Ensure that the load is balanced correctly and supported during lifting operations.
  • Maintain clear and effective communication with team members, crane operators, and other involved personnel during rigging operations. Implement standardised hand signals and radio communication protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal rigging and lifting operations regulations. Stay informed about industry standards and updates to relevant safety guidelines.
  • Address unexpected challenges or complications during rigging operations. Develop alternative plans or solutions to overcome obstacles and ensure the successful completion of tasks.
  • Maintain accurate records of rigging plans, inspections, and safety procedures. Document any incidents, near misses, or changes to the original rigging plan for future reference and improvement.

Rigger Training, Development and Assessment

  • Identify and utilise on-the-job learning opportunities to achieve required competency levels.
  • Check the quality of work done by Riggers and provide training and development to address deficiencies.
  • Give feedback to the Supervisor to ensure the Rigger's competence.
  • Advise concerned parties proactively on maintenance-related matters aligned with best practices and within agreed-upon timeframes to avoid possible problems.
  • Ensure that learners under supervision adhere to all relevant safety standards and procedures.

Assistance and Practices

  • Assist supervisor and co-workers when required within company policies, procedures and guidelines to enhance teamwork objectives.
  • Provide advice in all maintenance-related matters and tactics to concerned parties, proactively aligned with best practices and within agreed-upon timeframes to avoid possible problems and uplift the competence base.
