The Humanities and Social Sciences Department sits at the heart of Ashesi's liberal arts education. Through multidisciplinary course offerings in leadership and ethics, African studies, and communication, we help students develop ideas to shape Africa’s diverse societies for future generations. About the Role

As a Contract Faculty Intern (FI), you will support faculty in the Humanities and Social Sciences Department with teaching and learning, and other pre-assigned department activities (where applicable). The FI role is an opportunity to gain relevant teaching experience, prepare for graduate school, and/or a career as an Academic. Note Contract Faculty Interns are expected to provide support for up to three (3) undergraduate classes per semester. See Ashesi’s academic calendar here, for dates and timelines.

Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to.

In-class Responsibilities

  • Attend all lectures (in-person and/or online) and provide real time support to faculty and students including but not limited to tracking student attendance; liaise with the Hotline and IT teams to prepare all tech tools required for the class; monitor students participation in class activities; disseminate readings to students ahead of classes; etc.
  • Lead and facilitate discussion/lab sessions and other class sessions where necessary to review class content with students
  • Assist faculty with grading of assignments and quizzes. Note, Faculty Interns are not allowed to grade Final and Mid-Semester Assessments.
  • Assist course instructors in the planning, preparation, and delivery of class sessions for Neo-Traditional Dance Forms and Modern Dance Forms.
  • Support students in developing technical proficiency, choreographic understanding, and performance skills across both neo-traditional and modern dance vocabularies.
  • Help organize and supervise rehearsals, practical sessions, and student performances or showcases.

Administrative / Logistical Responsibilities

  • Schedule office hours to provide extra support to students who have general questions, are struggling or need extra revision support.
  • Coordinate off-site field trips with contact persons on the field, monitor student safety during field trip activities and liaise with relevant departments at Ashesi for bus and meal arrangements, etc.
  • Support faculty with lesson development and conduct desktop research for articles and other necessary information to be included in lesson plans
  • Document all recordings for online classes and share recording links with students
  • Report all student behavioural, participation and attendance concerns to the Hotline team as part of student inactivity reporting.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Performing Arts, Dance, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience or strong grounding in both neo-traditional and modern dance forms.
  • Prior experience working in an academic environment as a faculty intern, teaching assistant, or similar instructional support role for at least one academic year.
  • Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas, Camu, or similar platforms).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with students and faculty.
  • A genuine commitment to upholding Ashesi University's mission, values, and learning goals.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to elicit and communicate information and to prepare clear, informative and concise materials.
  • Ability to analyze, synthesize and summarize information.
  • Advanced proficiency in using the Microsoft Office Software suite (i.e. MS Word, SharePoint, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).

Preferred

  • A Master's degree in Performing Arts, Dance, or a related discipline is an added advantage.
  • Experience choreographing or directing student performances or showcases.
  • Familiarity with Ghanaian or West African neo-traditional dance traditions.
